Lakewood YAL, Temple YAL, West Hollywood YAL and East LA YAL participated in a week long camping excursion at Calaveras Big Trees state park. 40 youth from the various centers were exposed to many different activities that focused on self-growth, self-reliance, self-worth and self-confidence.
Under the supervision on YAL Deputy Sheriffs, the first day was spent with students setting up their own campsite, which consisted of tents and a kitchen area for the week trip. The next day, bright and early, the YAL Youths went to Alpine Lake where they engaged in activities such as paddleboard, kayak and hiking. The most challenging of the events was the team building day, where the teens learned how to work together to accomplish a common goal as a team.
The trip was not only a great experience for inner city youth, it taught valuable life lessons that will prepare them for all of life’s challenges. Deputy Steve Ferreira assigned to Lakewood YAL said “This was an opportunity for inner city youths to go camping for the first time, it was a memorable event.”
