“The purpose of man is in action, not thought.” – Thomas Carlyle
Standing on the threshold between 2013 and 2014, I can’t help but find myself in a reflective mood. The Sheriff’s Youth Foundation was able to accomplish so much over the past year.
In 2013, we added several new members to our board of directors, each of them bringing to the table their own unique passions for the youth we serve. I believe David Bergstein, Kia Jam, Richard Malchar, Alex Islas and Sam Solakyan will each continue to be an asset to us, raising awareness of and support for the work we do.
Another exciting development was the addition of Dr. Kathleen Van Antwerp as our Program Director. With a heart for seeing children succeed and an extensive background in education, she is taking us to new heights in reaching the youth of Los Angeles County.
Our Sheriff’s Shootout golf tournaments – at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia and the Riviera Country Club – gave golfers a chance to play on world-class courses and raise much-needed funds that support our various programs.
A highlight of the year was certainly our “Salute to Youth” gala in September, which celebrated the successes of the youth in our programs. The inspiring, positive changes we see in their lives are certainly the fruit of the labors of all the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation staff and volunteers.
As we look ahead to 2014, I am hopeful. I believe we are making a difference, one life at a time. The articles you read here represent only a fraction of the larger story of success we see.
We cannot do this alone. The coming year will not be without challenges. As a nonprofit organization, funding will continue to be a hurdle we face.
You can help us. Individual donations are one of our strongest sources of funding, and by making a financial contribution you are becoming a partner in our work to provide the youth of Los Angeles County with positive options and steer them toward pathways of life success. Every dollar we receive goes directly toward supporting that mission.
I hope you’ll consider making a donation at www.syfguidingstar.org, and help the children of our communities look forward to a brighter future full of potential.
