As part of a Sheriff’s Department drug prevention initiative, families at several YAL locations received at-home drug testing kits for the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.
The national nonprofit organization notMYkid has provided YALs with drug-testing kits for the past three years as part of its Back-to-School Substance Abuse Prevention campaign. This year YALs received 700 kits, which test for seven illicit drugs and five prescription drugs including marijuana and heroin.
The partnership between the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation and notMYkid aims to tackle drug problems in Los Angeles communities by starting a conversation between parents and children and giving children a chance to say “no” to peer pressure. Distribution of drug-testing kits and community outreach through this initiative are confronting drug problems in the most at-risk communities by providing parents with the resources to keep their children safe.
